ROMAN MAGSAYSAY AWARD
Magsaysay awards were instituted in 1957 and named after Roman Magsaysay, the late President of Philippines, who died in an air plane crash. Every year the Roman Magsaysay Award Foundation gives the prize to Asian individuals achieving excellence in their respective fields. The awards were given in six categories, five of which were discontinued effective 2009:

This award for Emerging Leadership started in year 2000 honours individuals of forty years of age and
below, doing outstanding work on issues of social change in their communities, but whose leadership is not yet broadly recognized outside of these communities. First award under this category was given in 2001 to Rajendra Singh.

T.M. Krishna and Bezwada Wilson (both from India) win Magsaysay Award- 2016
Mr. Krishna received the award for “social inclusiveness in culture,” while Bezwada Wilson was named as an awardee for “asserting the inalienable right to a life of human dignity.”
